To avoid seizures I should warn you that the video is in 4:3 (Source material shot on Super8, Digitised, Dumped onto VHS, re-digitised and data-moshed for our modern eyes).
Words from Celestial Communications promoter Iain Peebles:
Karen Constance and Dylan Nyoukis are key components in the UK DIY underground and have been for over 20 years. Through projects including Blood Stereo, Prick Decay/Decaer Pinga, The Polly Shang Kuan Band, Ceylon Mange, Colour Out of Space festival and their Chocolate Monk label, they’ve created and curated a vast body of work comprising sound, visual art, film and beyond and collaborated with the cream of the avant crop from Thurston Moore to Smegma most other folk in between.
As Blood Stereo they reappropriate strategies from the avant-garde (music concrete, sound poetry, field recording etc) and utilise them in a DIY context to create dark, foreboding soundscapes peppered with primal, wordless vocalisation and cracked electronics.
Ali Robertson and Malcy Duff are the brothers Usurper and have been producing their wilfully weird ass and largely unpopular (their words) work for the past decade. Armed with a table of assorted objects and half functioning ‘instruments’ the pair gurgle, splutter and creak their way around globs of metallic clatter to create an aural logic with a keen sense of the surreal and it’s own comic timing. Strap in.
Duncan Harrison/Tom Roberts Duo
Both these chaps have separate histories of coughing up all kinds of sonic head scratch. Roberts as The Infinite Gaah and part of Brighton based free improv jokers Bolide Awkwardstra and Harrison as, errr, Duncan Harrison mostly. What happens when they fuse perfectly like two halves of a manky Kinder Egg? Beats me but anything from mangled improv voice, tape based concrete wobble, bleak drones and beyond might pop out of that little yellow plastic case.
As well as being a dab hand with a pen (see poster for this event), Watson is also mainstay of the Cardiff music scene whether playing solo or previously as part of The Sound of Aircraft Attacking Britain. Through the mis-use and abuse of a variety of off the shelf consumer electronics and mysterious homemade devices Watson conjures up a decaying aural mulch that may well be the death rattle of some long forgotten circuitry.
Tickets £5 in advance and…£5 on the door. But advance tickets get a hand screened gig poster totally free (to be collected on the door).
